Proposition 64 passed in November 2016, legalizing recreational marijuana use in California. Starting Jan. 1, 2018, commercial cultivation and retail sales of cannabis also began, legalizing a potentially multibillion dollar industry. Recipients of the 2017 Daily Bruin travel grant traveled to northern California and Oregon to see how growers, including two college students, will shape the future of cannibis for the most populous state in the country.

Jintak Han produced, photographed and wrote for the project, joined by news writer Evolet Chiu, columnist Jasmine Aquino and videographer Iris Lee. The three-part series was published in print and online from May 22 to 24, 2017.
